Moussaka -serbian-
Serbian Musaka (Serbian Moussaka) is a flavorful and hearty dish that differs from the more well-known Greek moussaka. In Serbian cuisine, musaka is typically made with layers of potatoes, ground meat (often beef or a mixture of beef and pork), and sometimes eggplant or zucchini. Here’s a traditional Serbian musaka recipe.

Ingredients:
- 1 pound potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
- 1 pound ground beef (or a mixture of beef and pork)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup water or beef broth
- 1 cup grated cheese (Serbian kajmak is traditionally used, but you can use feta, mozzarella, or another cheese of your choice)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground beef (or beef-pork mixture) to the pan and cook until it’s browned and cooked through, breaking up the meat with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, paprika, black pepper, dried thyme, and salt. Mix everything together, and then add the water or beef broth. Let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.
- While the meat sauce is simmering, prepare the potatoes. Peel and slice them into 1/4-inch rounds.
- In a large baking dish, arrange a layer of sliced potatoes to cover the bottom of the dish.
- Pour half of the meat sauce over the potatoes, spreading it out evenly.
- Add another layer of sliced potatoes on top of the meat sauce.
- Pour the remaining meat sauce over the second layer of potatoes.
- Add a final layer of sliced potatoes on top.
- Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top layer of potatoes.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes.
- After the initial baking time, remove the aluminum foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
- Remove the musaka from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Serbian musaka is best served warm and can be accompanied by a side salad or pickles. It’s a comforting and satisfying dish that’s perfect for sharing with family and friends. Enjoy your homemade Serbian musaka!
